World leaders from 193 countries approved the 2030 agenda on September 25, 2015, to make nations aware of the need to promote a sustainable and inequality-free future. There are 17 objectives, accompanied by dozens of goals, related to sustainable development, which will be introduce over the next fifteen years, under the motto- “Transforming Our World” (UN, 2015).

Sustainability is often associated with the tourism sector, and in addition to the prodigious actions of tourism entities, only 55% of the players have introduced strategies in terms of sustainability(Euromonitor International, 2021).

In 2021, Euromonitor International launched a study on the most sustainable countries in tourism, analyzing a few factors such as environmental sustainability, accommodation sustainability, among others. In the year 2020 Portugal, is ranked in the 20th position in the ranking of the Sustainable Tourism Index. Although the numbers appear to be exponentially growing, there is still a lot to be done in the sector, namely in accommodation.
