Towards the end of 2019, Azores was rewarded and accredited as a sustainable tourist destination, after two long years of efforts and hard work. The certificate was handed out by the Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC), making the Azores the first region of its country and the only archipelago in the world to achieve it.
GSTC has been in place since 2007 and, along with 32 partners, has the goal of establishing global standards regarding sustainable tourism.
During the in-depth final audit, three islands were visited: São Miguel, Terceira and Flores, and a wide range of guidelines were analysed, such as water and energy conservation, greenhouse gas emissions, air quality, light and noise pollution, ecosystems management, transportation and sociocultural management.
Throughout our project we are going to fully explore the certification process and explain how important it has been in local, environmental, social, cultural and tourist terms.
