Best Practice – Aloha Surf & Sup School

After approaching the Surf School “Aloha Surf & Sup School” the need for sustainable solutions became clear.

What is the best solution for the surfing boards and materials used by students?

We drew an inspiration from the project “The unwanted shapes”, that originated the “Surf Social na Vila” initiative. The aim is to develop surfboards made from recycled plastic for the school community and other unprivileged people to enjoy, as well as setting up p plastic toothbrushes collectors.

This will make it possible to reduce the amount of plastic that goes into the ocean, which affects wildlife and create new sustainable surfboards.

Another practice is giving a new life to surf boards that are no longer usable by creating furniture and other decorative items as we can see on following image.

The goals of the project are to raise awareness about the problem of plastic in beaches and to take action and create campaigns that promote it and raise society’s awareness. Teaching students, teachers and tourists about protecting the oceans through of beach clean-ups, lectures and workshops.

We hope to implement the project in Vila do Conde beaches, at the Polytechnic Institute of Porto, at the School of Hospitality and Tourism and at Aloha Surf & SUP School.

To conclude, we aim to give away new surfing boards to the community and use the “Surf Social na Vila” project to provide opportunities to underprivileged children in the region, who don’t have access to this sport.
